In 1980 Sally Knapp and
Tedi Langdon, both professional performers
of distinction from New York, decided to
do something about Atlantas lack of
light opera entertainment. Enlisting J.
Lynn Thompson as music director and conductor,
they opened their first show, Gilbert &
Sullivans The Mikado in December of
that year under the auspices of the Southeastern
Savoyards.
A large and enthusiastic
audience attended opening night. The audiences
enthusiasm was infectious and critics expressed
the general belief that the new troupe
was embarked on a fine career, and
indeed we have performed to critical acclaim
under the baton of Maestro Thompson.
Since then, we have produced
all but two of the 14 G&S operettas
and have broadened our repertoire to include
classic light opera and beloved musicals
with increasingly rich staging and costumes
and a tremendous wealth of accomplished
performers, as well as an enlarged professional
orchestra.
Now in our third decade, we have changed our name but not what we do. As Atlanta's only professional musical theatre and light opera company, the Atlanta Lyric Theatre
continues to produce a varied repertoire.
G&S will be there. So will Rodgers and
Hammerstein. So will Lehar and Romberg.
The Lyric will continue to infuse the arts
scene in Atlanta with exciting, polished,
family productions well into the next century.
